Al Old Times At The LA Times

September 04, 2011

George Skelton has been at the LA Times a long time and
is a political commentator with a long tail resume.
Regardless to say he writes well.

He does have a California bias in terms of topics he
chooses, but then that is where he lives, doesn't he?
That perhaps is his assignment.

Some of his chosen topics: Proposition 2, Proposition
12, Proposition 11.

He celebrates Obama's election back in November by
declaring "The electorate has come a long way toward
eradicating religious and racial prejudices." And he
thrown in some nostalgic talk about JFK and how that
also was about breaking a barrier. The guy who mostly
talk local is also capable of the long view.

Do You Want To Make Money Blogging?

July 28, 2011

Darren Rowse can teach you how. He is a professional
blogger, and thinks you can make money too. Blogging
can be a hobby, and it is for most people, but it can
be a full time profession. That's what Darren argues.

He is out of Melbourne.

This guy is the Michael Jordan of professional
blogging. And he coaches. He is willing to share and
teach. All aspiring bloggers welcome.

Fight Club

May 08, 2009

Tyler Durden is one of the three authors at the top
finance blog Zero Hedge, a most prolific, high quality
blog. Tyler Durden if of course the Brad Pitt character
in the movie Fight Club. So this is an anonymous
blogger. The tone of the blog is brutal. But then the
market is brutal. And the blog's archives go back only
to January of this year. It is possible the blogger is
either a current or a former insider on Wall Street. He
is informed, he exudes in-depth knowledge of the
markets. The blog sure has created some buzz on the
Street. The blog partly feels guerrilla.

History Buff With A Beautiful Looking Blog

April 19, 2009

Rob is a history guy. So when he talks about
technology, he talks about technology from a few
hundred years ago. He has one amazing blog. It is
obvious the blog is a labor of love. He talks about
history, and technology, and he also talks about
whatever. He has a good feel for blogging as a medium.

He has been called a "historian rock star" and a "top
young historian." He also can get playful: “Zombies
are about what slavery does to you.” Slavery is a
serious topic, but he has managed to use a playful
metaphor without sounding disrespectful.

This guy is having fun at his blog, and you will too.

He Obviously Knows His Stuff

April 19, 2009

He is deft, he is knowledgeable. But I am not sure he
has a natural feel for the blogging medium. He is a
widely published author, and he has several degrees
from big name institutions. And he had made an attempt
to reach out of the ivory tower. But I am not sure he
has succeeded.

He writes for Scientific Blogging, but he also writes
for his personal blog Rationally Speaking where he
touches another side of his, and that is philosophy.

He is better at blogging about philosophy than
biology.

His several web presences also allow him to showcase
his many published books.

Highly Technical

April 19, 2009

You go to his blog because you have very specific
technical issues in a very specific technical domain -
Symfony - that you want some light thrown on. This guy
stays focused on his subject. So the blog is great for
that particular niche, but others don't bother
visiting.

The presentation is great. The blog is not cluttered.
The whole thing is easy on the eye. A bells and
whistles blog format would have been extra trying.

He Knows About It, So He Writes About It

April 19, 2009

Nate Lawson is passionate about it, so he writes about
it. That is a great definition of a blogger. Find your
niche and fill it up best you can. Build it and they
will come.

I'd guess he attracts a small, loyal band of other
security experts like him. They have a clique going on.

This guy is hard core.

But then he does tend to have a sprinkling of the non
tech, social, playful kind of blog posts. So the rest
of us need not feel completely lost in his company.

The Mossberg Solution Gal

April 19, 2009

Katherine is a columnist for the Wall Street Journal.
She shows up once a week. She writes for the masses.
She is young and promising.

Who has time to write how to organize your desktop?
Katherine does. Much of the advice she gives could come
handy for the basic tech stuff in your life.

She is a tech writer with an eye for the everyperson.
Her tone is respectful. She tries to avoid tech jargon
as much as she can.

Both A Writer And A Web Developer

April 18, 2009

I guess that gives him "street cred."

Some of his recent topics: Hulu, Gmail, Facebook,
Twitter. You could argue he's got fashion sense, as in
tech fashion sense.

When he writes about Twitter, for example, you can
tell he is a huge fan of the service. But then aren't
we all? Mark is good company.

His writing style is leisurely. His articles tend to
be graphic heavy. I particularly liked his coverage of
Gmail as it was being developed, when Gmail Lab was
unfolded.

Happy To Write Product Reviews

April 18, 2009

Devin comes across as a guy who will happily write
product reviews just to be able to try them, a whole
bunch of them. He writes with the enthusiasm of someone
who had to make a major career switch to find his true
calling, or at least true for now. They say find
something you like to do, and make a career out of it.
He did. Devin did, and the passion shows.

The arresting graphic, plus powerful first paragraph
formula comes into full play in Devin's reviews. The
sheer volume of his reviews is mind boggling. The
comprehensivity of it all is amazing. Although one has
to be wary of formula writing at some level.
