1 Review for Jody Rosen
By bhwalker
April 26, 2009
Jody Rosen writes serviceable, if rather unexciting
music reviews for Slate's Music Box column. His
reviews skew heavily toward rock releases with some
mainstream R&B acts thrown in for variety. If you're
looking for reviews of up-and-coming indie acts or a
sense of where the music scene is going as a whole, you
won't find it here. Rosen's music articles, which
address music trends or assess the significance of
certain performers, are more of a mixed bag. His
defenses of Mariah Carey and Amy Winehouse were
spirited and persuasive. Likewise, Rosen offered a
thoughtful piece on the legacy of the Notorious B.I.G.
earlier this year to coincide with the release of a
Biggie biopic. However, an article entitled "How
Thriller Changed Pop Music" did little more than survey
the singles released off the album and point out that
Michael Jackson sure sold a lot of records. Likewise,
a recent piece on the musical efforts of Carla Bruni,
the first lady of France, was more snark than
substance, ultimately concluding that the French Bruni
is, well, too French.
