Played Out

May 08, 2009

They say you should hate the player, not the game. Sinn
makes that a little difficult. He seems like an affable
enough guy, what with his post about not wanting women
to be kept financially because it degrades them. But
the whole purpose of his blog is to play the game of
male/female relationships and teach others to play the
game, too. Frankly, this is just beyond me. Do men
really need this much help getting laid? Apparently he
can teach men how to get high quality lady action
through intense one-on-one coaching, and I'm just left
to wonder: what's wrong with being yourself? This is
"The Rules" for men and really rather disheartening.

Delightfully Irreverent

May 08, 2009

The "portraits" drawn and observations made by 14, a
California artist with a taste for the sensational, are
delightfully irreverent. In her celebrity gossip art,
she captures the inherent absurdity with wit and charm
and a soupcon of scorn. Her other pieces are often
quirky and kitschy and just the slightest bit
off-putting, but in a very good way. I like the way 14
sees the world: colorful, messy, and a bit twisted.

Little gorgeous things

May 08, 2009

Grace Bonney's blog Design*Sponge is one of those sites
you just want to drool over for ages. Gorgeous things,
creative suggestions, unique perspectives, and
scrumptious eye candy.

I love the Biz Ladies aspect of the site: helping
women-run art and design businesses network.

One thing does bug me, as an editor. I wish she'd use
capital letters at the beginning of sentences.

Advice for your soul

April 28, 2009

Cary Tennis' writing makes me feel comforted, like a
wise elder brother has patted my shoulder and told me
I'm ok, that all will be well, that it will be hard,
that it might rip my heart out, but all will be well.
He's got a very zen, peaceful, intuitive way with words
that I'm sure makes the questioner feel heard and
accepted. Whatever their problem or mistake or failure,
he doesn't judge or rely on pat answers or rah-rah you
through it. He delves and tells a story and gets to the
heart, the soul, of the issue. His advice is
contemplative and kind.

Girl positive!

April 27, 2009

Gretchen at "Girls Can't WHAT?" has dedicated her
website to encouraging women and girls to pursue their
dreams. The writing is conversational and clean and
uplifting. She has a great focus on empowering girls
with timely, affirmative, and approachable posts. There
are book reviews, calls to action, links to other
girl-positive sites, and personal essays. Very nicely
done, and worthwhile. I'll be back.

Honest and accomplished, but a mixed bag

April 27, 2009

Some of Stephanie's writing I loved, like her little
leap-frog thoughts about Aristophanes and the cheese
grater. There's an honesty here that's engaging and
likeable.

But then there are others, like the one about her
being hot and worrying about the maid seeing her naked
butt when she comes in in the morning that trickles on
down to how she dropped her cellphone in her wine, that
just fell a little flat.

Garden variety misogynism for the erudite

April 27, 2009

Roissy's writing is technically accomplished, if a bit
overwrought, but his topic is so puerile as to be
off-putting for most women and I hope quite a few men
(although the number of comments per post leads me to
think otherwise). It's not that I doubt the game
exists, it's that I doubt the efficacy of his playbook.

If you don't mind racism, sexism, misogynism, and a
1950s mentality about male/female relationships (not to
mention gender roles), there are a few funny posts.
Useful for raising the blood pressure and engendering
enmity.

Review of Sarah Warn

Engaging, current, and funny

April 27, 2009

Sarah Warn knows her audience and connects well with
them by being engaging and funny but also insightful
and questioning. She has a very strong voice, and you
know where she stands, but she's able to illustrate
where society is backsliding with humor and grace.

Her piece on Twilight vs. Harry Potter was timely and
respectful, and I really enjoyed her discussion on the
lack of LGBT characters on Life, one of my favorite
shows. I hadn't realized the points she discussed, and
I appreciatee that she was able to open my eyes to that
disparity.
