Bringing People Together

July 17, 2009

When I first started my progression to being a social
media guru, hmmm several months ago now, Danny Brown
was one of the first people I came across. It seemed
that everywhere I went, I saw the same avatar, a guy in
a funny cap who looked like he had stepped out of one
of those old style Hovis TV ads.

After I while I plucked up the courage to check out
his blog and I'm glad I did.

Danny Brown's brain seems to work a bit differently
to most people's, he sees things in ways that many
others miss. The stories on his blog are often quite
simple, but always cause me to question my own views -
make me think.

I like the way that Danny doesn't use his blog to
promote products or to fill it with advertising -
something that is becoming rare among the top social
media guys.

The one thing Danny does promote is the organization
he started 12for12k, a way for regular people to use
social media to help others.

When I think about it, I've met many of my favorite
people on Twitter through Danny Brown or 12for12k.
Danny seems to have a knack for bringing people
together and that is a great gift.

One of the "must read" blogs

June 17, 2009

Seth's blog is one of the first I ready each morning.
To be honest I often feel that "new marketing experts"
are often more hype than anything, but Seth lives up to
the title.

On my blog I have a plugin that shows what I'm
sharing on Google Reader. The two author's most often
on the page are Seth Godin and Tim Jahn. Both tend to
keep their posts short and to the point - also get me
thinking before starting the day.

As has already been noted, Seth doesn't allow
comments on his blog - some would say this prevents his
site from being a blog at all. I'm sure he has his
reasons for this, but it is a shame because many of his
posts would lead to some great discussions.

Mr. Cool!

June 05, 2009

Yes, Arik is Mr. Cool. Not necessarily in the cool and
trendy way, but because he always seems to have just
the right demeanor and says exactly the right thing.

While making a contribution to social media, it seems
Arik has been around long enough to know that there is
a place for some of the more traditional ways as well.
If I ever needed advice on anything PR related, Arik
would be right up there on my list of people to ask -
and I'm pretty sure he'd be happy to help.

Yep - Mr. Cool!

My daughter and I love Pioneer Woman

June 02, 2009

I think it was my daughter that discovered the
Confessions of a Pioneer Woman blog.

For a while she was there all the time, often reading
me the stories of life on the ranch with the Marlboro
Man. Really funny stories they are too!

We've also made some of the recipes, we especially
love the Heaven of a Fork beef tenderloin one and the
snotty sister pasta.

So it's all good fun, very entertaining - can be a
bit fattening as well (wow - that's a lot of butter!!)

Mack Collier is THE man when it comes to blogging

June 02, 2009

So I've messed around with blogging for years - never
really getting any satisfaction from the process.

Then I came across this guy in the cowboy hat and
everything fell into place!

Actually it wasn't quite that simple, but I've
learned so much since I discovered Mack Collier. I have
not found anyone with such a clear idea as to how
something simple like a blog can revolutionize how a
business approaches marketing.

From reading Mack's posts on his blog and in other
places, I learned that I was doing a lot right, that I
could be more effective and that blogging isn't
frustrating it is fun!

Even though helping business with blogging is part of
how Mack makes his living, he is also really generous
with advice and direction for anyone wanting to learn -
just show up at his #blogchat at Twitter to see for
yourself. Whether you are a complete beginner or a
power blogger, the welcome from Mr. Collier is just as
warm.

You definitely want to keep track of Mack Collier on
Twitter or other media.

I like to start the day with Tim

June 02, 2009

The Sun Rises Today is one of the first things I check
out in Google Reader in the morning.

Tim's posts are just right for that time of day. Bite
sized pieces that are easy to digest, but always get
the sleepy old brain cells moving.

Obviously some of Tim's little stories work better
than others, but without exception they leave me with
some thinking to do.

Good stuff!
