One Mom Among Many Going It Alone

July 25, 2010

I must confess a lack of objectivity regarding Chritine
Coppa’s blog, Storked! She, like me, is a single mom
in the most literal sense of the word (the so-called
“father” has no involvement in the lives of our
children what so ever). She is a solid writer who
candidly shares the fears, joys, frustrations,
backlash, limitations and laughs that are part of the
daily life of truly single parents. I am thankful to
know that there are others like me out there making an
enjoyable, positive life for themselves and their
children. The stories, advice and vulnerabilities that
she reveals to her readers provide hope and
encouragement to those who struggle with the aloneness
of abandonment.

Making Mom's Life A Little Easier

July 23, 2010

5 Minutes for Mom is a great online community of loyal
readers and friendly writers. Janice provides useful
tips for saving time and having fun with the little
ones. She suggests products to make cleaning easier,
to save precious memories, to organize the jungle of
toys, clothes and other detritus that small children
collect. She also features ways to pamper mom; be it a
good book to curl up with on the couch, or a new purse,
or a relaxing day away from the family, She offers
terrific giveaways and an interactive approach to
parenting that focuses on shared experiences and

An Insider's Perturbed Commentary

May 27, 2009

Chez's blog, Deus Ex Malcontent, is a collection of
socio-political analyzes and opinions - opinions which
so deeply offended his CNN overlords that he was canned
for publishing them. He makes no apologies for his
liberal slant as his posts reflect his personal views
on the news of the day. With his vast experience in
journalism, his articles are predominantly political;
but Chez's themes run the gamut from Saturday morning
cartoons to Miss America. His prose is clear, concise,
and, save for some occasional profanity, relatively
safe for work. Chez's ideas are as strong and serious
as his writing style, and will be enjoyed by anyone who
shares his progressive ideals.

Love The Earth, Man

May 24, 2009

Michael Graham Richard is the man to go to if you’re
looking to go green. One of the bloggers at
Treehugger, he is a treasure trove of useful
information about the green lifestyle. He tracks
planet problems such as, climate change, ocean
evaporation, biodiversity, and the latest developments
in green fuels and cars. Richard offers practical,
cost effective ways to reduce personal impact around
the home. He writes with sincerity and clarity – a
true warrior for the earth.

Quick And To The Point

May 24, 2009

Josh Marshall utilizes neutral language to promote the
liberal cause at Talking Points Memo. He posts links
to video and opinion pieces posted elsewhere on the
web, but he writes with a journalistic approach, as
opposed to satire or vitriol. Marshall follows
breaking stories carefully, often posting multiple
times on the same topic, providing his readers with
updates and developments. His posts are generally
direct and succinct with links for further study.

Political Gossip Monger

May 23, 2009

Wonkette is a political blog, but reads more like a
tabloid – except, instead of celebrities, Sarah K.
Smith ridicules political figures. She has a heavy
liberal bias, but takes pot shots at everyone,
Republican, Democrat or Independent. Nothing pleases
Smith more than the fall and shame of a powerful
figure, so it’s no surprise that she got a lot of
mileage out of the Blagojevich scandal. She uses
comedy to reveal the ridiculous in the political scene,
but I find her humor a little pedestrian.

Be In The Know

May 23, 2009

Steve Singiser is the resident expert on elections and
campaigns at the Daily Kos. It’s a blog more serious
in tone (though there is a healthy amount of sarcasm)
and is dedicated to condensing data and predicting
election outcomes. The interest here is geared for a
liberal mindset –Singiser tracks poll data mainly for
Democratic elections and causes, but it’s a fairly
bloodless site for people with interest in Party
analysis and plotting.

He Didn't Start The Fire, But He Fans It

May 23, 2009

John Amato is a brilliant tactician in the “culture
war.” At Crooks and Liars he uses media to mock
media in the same vein as The Daily Show, and
with the same liberal passion. He attacks the
perennial whipping boys of the left, Fox News,
relentlessly and with vigor; there’s a lot of
name-calling. Amato is a good source of information
about interplay between camps within the Democratic
Party, and for nuanced defense of its policies and
personalities.

No, It's Not THAT Kind of OTB

May 23, 2009

James Joyner’s blog, Outside the Beltway, is not
completely limited to the political area, but it
certainly is relevant to current events. His articles
are generally extensive, well-cited and thought
provoking. Joyner is obviously politically and
fiscally conservative, but his posts are not vitriolic
diatribes that rail endlessly against liberals; but
rather, reasonable dissertations about real issues that
offer and/or promote tangible solutions to this
nation’s problems. Whether you agree or disagree
with his views, his presentation is sensible and
gracious.

Yes, It Is Possible To Be A Conservative Homosexual

May 22, 2009

Bless the Internet for sites like Bruce Carroll’s
blog, Gay Patriot. It’s a conservative blog for gay
Americans. I may not agree with his political
viewpoint, but I acknowledge his neutral language,
measured tone and articulate arguments. This man is
not trying to start a flame war; he simply states and
defends his position in a reasonable manner. Carroll
is a bit of a conundrum, though – he’s against the
DADT policy for gays in the military, but sympathizes
with social conservatism’s opposition to gay
marriage. But he’s certainly an interesting and
intelligent read.
