Small Scale Gardening

May 25, 2009

Fern Richardson gears her blog, Life on the Balcony,
toward gardening in small spaces. She gives tips and
tricks to create a container gardens in spaces that are
less than excessive. Her writing is friendly and
helpful and she is clearly knowledgeable on the topic
and, for the most part, does a good job giving step by
step or simple explanations and instructions for
beginner gardeners. Fern gives sun and shade options
and points out obstacles with small spaces, though
there wasn’t much for beginners about what works best
for the area they live in and the kind of weather they
get. It was nice to see, however, that she included
some crafts and links to pages with crafts that help to
brighten up your outdoor space.

Developing Your Green Thumb With Container Gardening

May 23, 2009

Life on the Balcony is the blog of Fern Richardson, a
Southern California girl with a passion for small space
and container gardening. If you have ever wondered how
to garden on your apartment or condo balcony, this is
your blog. Richardson shares her tips for growing your
own fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers - all with
the space that you have. She gives step by step
instructions and in depth information about what will
grow where (shade versus sun, west versus east facing
porch or deck). She also goes into companion gardening,
which is planting certain flowers and herbs and
vegetables in groups that will counteract the pests
that attract them (like planting nasturtiums or garlic
with roses to keep pests off the roses). A fun blog,
now I know that I can garden even on my front porch.
