Mr. Holman writes in a very grown-up style, somehow
reminding the reader of the unequalled political
analyst William F. Buckley. He quickly cuts to the
meat of the topic and in a few entertaining paragraphs
exposes an issue from several sides. It is especially
refreshing to have a rare combination of easy humor and
go-to-the-dictionary vocabulary. There lies, however,
my one criticism: as with any writer, when one uses a
"big word," one should use it correctly. Mr.
Holman committed the practically unforgiveable sin of
trusting his memory without verifying when he placed
the plural form of "cognoscenti" where the
singular form "cognoscente" was required.
That reduces the impact of reading an unfamiliar word
to a shake of the head and the passing thought of
"How could he have done such thing!" Good
writer; grievous error.

One of the Best for Commentary on Business & Industry

April 29, 2009

Holman Jenkins is a rare find in the realm of business
writing, he is simultaneously informative and
entertaining. His weekly editorial column, Business
World, published on the WSJ website is honest, fact
based, and often infused with a biting sarcasm not
regularly seen in old school giants such as the Wall
Street Journal. Jenkins writing presents a refreshing
perspective on the goings on of the corporate world.
The writing is straight forward and accessible (or as
straight forward and accessible as you’ll find in the
Wall Street Journal) but doesn’t sacrifice
intelligence in its pursuits. I highly recommend
Jenkins’s weekly column for the information,
perspective, and inevitable presence of at least one
amazingly snarky line that that alone make me want to
forward his columns to everyone I know.
