Cynic at Large

August 03, 2009

Jack purports to be a critic...but regurgitates a
cynicism bereft of facts or metrics....the same
complaint he makes in "debunking" lazy reportage of
trends. He is humorless, biting, and selects random
articles or authors from the distant past or irrelevant
present as targets of his scorn. He is...alas...a
curmudgeon.

A force for change

May 15, 2009

Jack Shafer's got the right idea. He has the
background, the smarts, and the stamina not only to
keep up with media criticism, but to help shape its
future. Since media is at such a critical stage in its
development--what will happen to the traditional
venues? how will online efforts fare in the
long-term?--the topics Shafer has from which to choose
are getting wider and, at least to me, more and more
interesting. I'm eager to see where he'll take it all.

If you care about newspapers

April 29, 2009

Shafer is certainly your guy if you care about the
storm that is swallowing newspapers or if media -- new
or old -- interests you. And it should. But there are
occasions when Shafer could be sharper. There are times
when he writes something instead of writing something
on point. But those are rare instances.

The Top Dog At Slate

April 09, 2009

That top dog at Slate just so happens to be a top notch
media critic. Someone said rightly, to Shafer there is
no sacred cow. There is no name to holy in mainstream
media he will not snatch at. That makes him a pretty
commanding voice in these turbulent times for the
newspaper industry.

Incisive commentary at its finest...

April 06, 2009

Like Hunter Thompson in his adroit late 80s columns for
the San Francisco Examiner, Jack Shafer never loses
sight of irreverent levity. A gadfly of the highest
order, Shafer is as comfortable roasting the New York
Times as he is indulging in the usual anti-cable news
polemics. Heck, he even advocated a return to unabashed
yellow journalism in a recent column -- perhaps just
the drastic measure that newspapers need to take in
this shifting climate. As a chronicler of the paradigm
shift in media communications, Shafer is first rate.
Even if you aren't directly involved in the industry,
his insights are always accessible to the educated
layman.

Incisive, unbiased media criticism

April 04, 2009

If you want to get the news, read the daily newspaper.
But if you want to know the real story, check out Jack
Shafer's Press Box column on Slate. Shafer is an ever
vigilant watchdog, keeping the mainstream media on its
toes. His sharp, witty columns take major
publications, news anchors and reporters to task for
identifying bogus trends, committing plagiarism , and
relying too much on anonymous sources. Shafer
recognizes no sacred cows. He won't hesitate to expose
errors committed by news giants such as the New York
Times or criticize well-loved media figures such as
Bill Moyers. And his incisive wit is non-partisan; he
is as hard on Vanity Fair and his own employer, the
Washington Post, as he is on Bill O'Reilly and Rupert
Murdoch. Shafer's prose is concise and direct, and his
sardonic humor will make you chuckle. More important,
his column teaches the reader not to put blind faith in
the mainstream media.
