Welch�s work has appeared in The Washington Post, Columbia Journalism Review, Los Angeles Daily News, Orange County Register, LA Weekly, ESPN.com, Salon.com, Wired, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The Daily Star of Beirut, and dozens of other publications.

Before 1998, Welch lived for eight years in Central Europe, where he co-founded the region's first post-communist English-language newspaper, Prognosis, worked as UPI's Slovakia correspondent and managed the Budapest Business Journal.

He lives in Washington, DC, with his wife Emmanuelle.

Matt Welch is the Editor and Chief of Reason Magazine
and also contributes heavily to other publications,
including the The Washington Post, Salon.com, and the
LA Times where he used to serve as the assistant
editorial page editor. His book, McCain: The Myth of a
Maverick is a shining example of what I enjoy so much
about Matt Welch. He is simultaneously idealistic about
the capabilities of the individual and staunchly aware
of the danger of a collective prone to
oversimplification and cheap sound bites. He abhors the
trend seen in mainstream media to value the legend of
an individual over the person’s substance. Best of
all, Welch is consistent in his application of this
criticism, and equally focuses on substantive validity
over storybook reductions whether his subject his
ideological friend or foe.
