I don't dislike people like Peter Smith. I don't. That
said, I don't particularly like them, either. The idea
of an "academic" conjures images of a pretentious,
egotistical maniac always at hand to reveal what's off
with the rest of society. Peter Smith, at least based
on his writing, fits the bill. So a blog detailing,
again and again, all I find wrong with academia? No
thanks.

Peter Smith thinks it does. He has a blog to make his
point, week after week after week.
If his Twitter updates are any hint, he is on the
pedantic side. One recent update: "Should I lambast
another local theologian (an illiterate pseud
pretending to be a philosopher). Why should they be let
get away with it?"
Blogging has done all these academics - Peter is a
Cambridge professor - a lot of good. They have been
allowed to reach out to us outside the walls. From a
recent post: "It's all been getting a bit monochrome
and serious here lately (memo to self: lighten up a
bit)."
His blog tells you as much about his philosophical
leanings, as the life of an academic philosopher. It is
not an easy job.
