One of SI's better and more evocative writers

May 09, 2009

Layden has many things to recommend him to an SI
reader: he writes about varied subjects, with evocative
language that makes him stand out from the crowd, and
with a style that easily fits to the topic he takes on.
Two great examples of this are when he wrote about the
Kentucky Derby and about this year's NCAA tournament;
very different subjects, but he managed to effectively
convey a sense of wonder about the results of the first
and a hard-hitting, almost film noir style in the
second.
